It’s a known fact in my family that I love some specific kind of meals and snacks, especially Nigerian meat pie recipe.

I am a great fan of meat pie. I loved it then and even now.

You will love it too, I take it in a royal way because it has a royal touch in it. It is very rich and has an outstanding taste.

Then, I never knew I could make the Nigerian meat pie recipe at home. So you can imagine how excited I felt when I discovered it was something I could prepare myself.

Do you that you can also take your meat pie as a meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner)?

You can be taken with a drink, ice cream or any drink of your choice.

Ingredients for dough – Nigerian Meat Pie Recipe

– Plain flour 1kg

– Butter 500gm

– Baking powder 1 tbs

– Sugar 2 tbs( optional)

– Salt 1 tsp

– Eggs 4

– Milk 3 tbs

Ingredients for inside fillings

– Minced beef 500gms (you can add more)

– Scotch bonnet (rodo) 2

– Carrots 2

– Plain flour 2

– Seasoning cube (2), thyme, mixed spices, salt to taste.

– Egg (glazing).

Utensils for the Nigerian Meat Pie Recipe

– Baking tray

– Round bowl or meat pie cutter

– Rolling pin

– Knife

– Fork

– Tablespoon

– Baking brush

Preparation for Dough – Nigerian Met Pie Recipe

Pour flour into a mixing bowl, add your baking powder, salt, sugar and mix well together.

Cut butter into small chunks and add to the mixture. Mix together.

Keep mixing till it becomes like breadcrumbs.

Create a hole in the middle of the mixture, and pour in 3 whisked eggs.

Mix together with fingers and start working the dough together with your fingers (this will help incorporate all ingredients together).

However, do not overwork (it won’t be flaky if overworked).

Add a little milk or water and knead it together.

Place back into the mixing bowl and cover with a cling film

Place in the fridge for 30 minutes or more

Preparation for filling – Nigerian meat pie recipe

Place pot on fire, add oil and allow it heat up. Add your onions, scotch bonnet and let it cook for 122 minutes.

Add minced meat, break into smaller pieces to prevent meat clusters.

Stir continuously in order to incorporate the onions and peppers well together with minced beef. Fry until its brown.

Add seasoning cube, spices and thyme. Stir together and let it cook for 3 minutes

Add carrots, potatoes and hot water. Allow it cook for 6 minutes.

Once water reduces, add plain flour it. Begin to stir immediately.

Keep stirring to combine together.

If you want it thick and moist, don’t add water anymore.

Let it cook for 5 minutes.

Set aside to cool down

Line your baking tray with butter and set aside.

Whisk the last egg and set aside

Bring out your dough

Sprinkle flour on a flat surface.

Place dough on it and cut it into smaller chunks

Take a chunk and roll it out with a rolling pin (don’t make it too thick or thin).

Take a round bowl or meat pie cutter, place on the rolled dough and cut out the excess dough from the edges.

Pour 1-2 tablespoon of filling into the centre of the dough.

Carefully fold the dough together and press edge evenly

Use a fork to crimp the edges.  Do same for remaining dough

Dip pastry brushes into whisked eggs and glaze all the pie (this gives it an attractive glow).

Use a fork to create tiny holes in the middle.

Place in oven and bake at 175 °C for about 45 minutes.

When done, bring it out and let it cool off a while.

One beautiful thing is this, as the world is changing, so also some recipes have also been transformed.

The Nigerian meat pie recipe has also undergone some changes. Some of the changes include adding of sugar, milk and so on.
